Being a Better Parent Notes From Ed

A friend reached out to me recently, asking about my book. He has a son he thinks could use a little boost, so my friend wanted to buy him an autographed copy with an inscription on the inside cover. My friend knew about the inspiring stories PROJECT BOLD LIFE: The Proven Formula to Take on Challenges and Achieve Happiness and Success contains, and was especially keen on the goal-setting tools.

I told him that if he really wanted to help his son, he should read the book, too. Why? Because then he could be the parent that helps his kid determine his Bold Goals and iron out an action plan. After all, good parents get involved in helping their kids succeed.

During our conversation, I brought up one of the featured stories in my book–the one about “Tiger Mom” Amy Chua. Chua took a very active role in carving out a successful future for her kids, with her efforts helping get them into Ivy League schools, law school and even a judicial clerkship.

I told my friend that you don’t just give a kid a book and tell them to read it–you help them work it all out together! He could be part of his son’s Commitment Team. He could also be there when it comes time for an Accountability Appointment to check on his son’s progress toward those goals.

“Ultimately,” I said, “when he talks about the book, you’ll have a firm understanding of what the lessons are. In essence, you would be making the Bold journey together.”

He was sold on that idea. And what parent wouldn’t be? The notion of boosting a kid’s chances for success and taking that journey with them… as a father, that would be a dream come true for me! A hard copy of PROJECT BOLD LIFE is a great gift for young adults trying to wrap their arms around the future–whether that means career, relationships, finances or whatever–and any parent would love to be a part of that.

Before publication, when I was sending out advance copies for early reviews, I got this from Dr. Marion Brody, a radiologist who is also a mother: “Every parent should read this book! And then tell their children to read it as well!”

I couldn’t agree more!
